Nearly 25,000 Left Without Power in South-East Queensland and Victoria Following Powerful Weather Systems

Around twenty-five thousand homes in south-east Queensland found themselves without power on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms passed over the area, producing wind gusts topping 109km/h.

Massive Frozen Precipitation and Extensive Destruction

Locals observed giant hailstones reaching sizes of seven centimeters in certain regions. The Bureau of Meteorology announced that different parts across the state had been affected by substantial ice precipitation.

Utility workers were attempting to repair energy supply throughout the damaged zones, with nearly 70 crews deployed to address the widespread outages.

Victoria's Weather Woes

At the same time, around 1,000 residents in the southern state also encountered electricity disruptions after the metropolitan area experienced its most precipitation in 18 months.

Emergency response teams received nearly 600 calls for help across the area, primarily for building damage but also for downed trees and water accumulation.

  • Hoppers Crossing suburb - various assistance requests
  • Wyndham - over 175 emergency requests

At one point on Sunday, more than 28,000 energy customers in the state were lacking electricity.

Meteorological Predictions

Humid circumstances were expected to linger along much of Queensland's east this coming days as a weather pattern continued to draw in moisture against the coast.

The following day was predicted as the wettest day, with ongoing storm activity predicted across multiple regions of both areas.

Safety Concern

Medical authorities warned that there was an higher risk of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the state's northern country region, particularly given the existing atmospheric conditions.
